Samantha morton fantastical beast8/12/2023 ![]() The Muggles of JK Rowling’s Britain are a bit of a joke. Thanks for reading and let’s all keep supporting our beloved film industry.Read more America’s Muggles (OK, No-Majs) are no laughing matter Somewhat over-stretched but all in all a bold and admirable attempt at breathing new life into a franchise – the question remains, do we really want to resuscitate? Alas, the film’s score lacks the dazzling qualities of John William’s Harry Potter theme and it suffers from inconsistent CGI and an over-exaggerated final act. It feels like a completely separate entity with just enough familiarity. All in all, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a well balanced but inconsistent addition to what’s gone before. He’s on screen for merely a minute but it was enough to infuriate. It seems Depp now thinks a change of contact lenses is a fitting substitute for giving an actual performance. His portrayal of such an infamous character is baffling and ill judged. Johnny Depp is unforgivable casting, a hideous addition to the cast in a role that he hams up to the max, in the fashion we’ve now come to expect from him. Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol are the surprise delights of the picture an adorable supporting duo of muggle and mind reading witch. Colin Farrell is on decent form and Eddie Redmayne surprisingly won me over, despite concerning typecasting at this early stage in his career. I would have loved to see Miller in Depp’s role – casting that would make much more sense. Katherine Waterston, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller and the astounding Carmen Ejogo are all wonderful additions to the Potter-sphere despite Ejogo being terribly underused and Miller being dumped into an underdeveloped role. In its weakest, it’s Johnny Depp with a bad haircut. In its finest moments, this is a smart, witty tale of a lone wolf on a mission to protect his beloved creatures. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them loses its way in its second half but has enough whimsical small details to satisfy fans of the original series. The wizard, Newt Scamander, brings with him a suitcase containing an abundance of magical creatures but none as threatening as the one violently assaulting the city and its residents. Meanwhile, a British wizard with an overactive suitcase arrives in Manhattan, bringing with him a magical caper across the city with an astounded muggle and two ‘charming’ witches in tow. It’s 1927 and a mysterious beast appears to be wreaking havoc throughout New York City. ![]() Hence, I’ve been wary of watching the latest film about the escapades of the author of a Hogwarts required textbook that I read, shivering next to the lockers, all those years ago. I did not sign up to Pottermore and I was violently unimpressed with the fan fiction nonsense that crept into the pages of the stage play’s script. ![]() Since then, I’ve always been a tad sceptical about extensions of the universe, one that holds a special place in my imagination. Once the film series concluded I felt content. I recall being about 10 years old and reading through Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them whilst wrapped in a soggy towel, sat in the swimming pool changing room as my hair dried into stubborn knots. Over the last 18 years I have revisited all 7 books and 8 films multiple times and spent many a car journey and restless night with Stephen Fry perfectly delivering each story from cassette (later CD) to my ears. This review must begin with a confession: I am a Potter-head an old school one at that. ![]()

Hot springs quake lake8/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Scientists do not know if the strong surface waves from the Denali quake independently triggered Yellowstone’s small quakes and changes in geyser activity. How the Denali Quake Sparked Yellowstone Activity Oddly, geysers affected by earlier nearby earthquakes – most notably Old Faithful and Grand Geyser in Upper Geyser Basin – were not affected by the Denali earthquake. Most geysers returned to their normal timing days to months after the Denali quake. Geysers that erupted less frequently after the Denali quake included Castle and Plate geysers in Upper Geyser Basin and Lone Pine Geyser in West Thumb Geyser Basin. Geysers that erupted more frequently following the Denali quake included Daisy, Depression, Plume and Riverside geysers in Upper Geyser Basin, and Pink Geyser in Lower Geyser Basin. Eight of the 22 “displayed notable changes in their eruption intervals” after the Denali quake, 10 showed no significant changes and the other four were too erratic in the timing of their eruptions to determine if the quake changed them, the researchers wrote. Yellowstone has more than 10,000 geysers, hot springs and fumaroles (steam vents), and scientists monitored how often 22 of the geysers erupted during the winter of 2002-2003. Meanwhile, some geysers erupted more frequently than normal, while others erupted less frequently. “In the same area, another hot spring that was usually clear showed muddy, turbid water.” “The temperature at one of these springs increased rapidly from about 42 to 93 degrees Celsius ” and became much less acidic than normal. “Several small hot springs, not known to have geysered before, suddenly surged into a heavy boil with eruptions as high as 1 meter ,” Smith and colleagues wrote in Geology. Greater than if the Denali quake’s waves were aimed elsewhere, he says.Īs the Denali quake’s surface waves arrived at Yellowstone, changes in hydrothermal activity first were noted at the 100 Spring Plain hot spring system in Norris Geyser Basin. As a result, the stresses rippling through the ground at Yellowstone were 200 to 300 times ![]() Smith believes the Denali fault ruptured in such a direction – from northwest to southeast – that the brunt of its energy and its powerful surface waves were aimed southeast toward Yellowstone. The magnitude-7.5 Hebgen Lake, Mont., quake northwest of Yellowstone – a 1959 disaster that killed 28 people – triggered changes in Yellowstone’s geysers and hot springs, something not unexpected for a strong quake nearby. That belief was shattered in 1992 when the magnitude-7.3 Landers earthquake in California’s Mojave Desert triggered a swarm of quakes more than 800 miles away at Yellowstone, as well as other temblors near Mammoth Lakes, Calif., and Yucca Mountain, Nev. Scientists once believed that an earthquake at one location could not trigger earthquakes at distant sites. Strong Earthquakes as Seismic and Geothermal Triggers Most of the triggered quakes were centered near geysers and hot springs. (Tiny quakes have negative magnitudes because modern seismic equipment can detect quakes smaller than was possible when the logarithmic magnitude scales were devised.) He says the quakes ranged in magnitude from minus 0.5 to just under 3.0. Smith now says the triggered quakes at Yellowstone numbered more than 1,000 within a week of the Denali quake – if the count includes tiny temblors that were not “located,” meaning their epicenters and depths were not determined. Less than 18 hours after the Denali earthquake in Alaska, Smith and colleagues at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations reported the major jolt had triggered more than 200 small earthquakes in Yellowstone – something widely reported by news media in the days following the quake. Smith conducted the study with Stephan Husen, a University of Utah adjunct assistant professor of geophysics who works at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Ralph Taylor, an engineer who designs geyser monitoring equipment at Yellowstone National Park and Henry Heasler, Yellowstone National Park’s geologist. They say the magnitude-7.9 quake was one of the strongest of its type in North America in the past 150 years. 3, 2002, is the first known to have changed the behavior of such hydrothermal features at great distances, according to Smith and his colleagues. While other large quakes have been known to alter the activity of nearby geysers and hot springs, the Denali fault earthquake of Nov. Smith, a co-author of the study in the June issue of the journal Geology. “We did not expect to see these prolonged changes in the hydrothermal system,” says University of Utah seismologist Robert B. A powerful earthquake that rocked Alaska in 2002 not only triggered small earthquakes almost 2,000 miles away at Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park – as was reported at the time – but also changed the timing and behavior of some of Yellowstone’s geysers and hot springs, a new study says. ![]()

Escape from tarkov launcher8/12/2023 ![]() Synopsis SettingĮscape from Tarkov is set in the fictional city of Tarkov, the capital of the Norvinsk Special Economic Zone in Northwestern Russia between the years 20. The player must also monitor their energy and hydration levels over the course of a raid. Scavenging items from containers and bodies takes time, as each item is revealed individually while the player searches. The game models realistic ballistics, including features such as ricochets and bullet penetration. Taking damage requires specific types of medical supplies to address wounds, such as bandages for bleeding. The game also has a health system, whereby each of the character's limbs has hit points. To check how much ammunition is still in their weapon requires checking the magazine manually – no on-screen counter is provided. In-game, the player has fine-grained control over their character's movement speed and crouch height. They can equip their character with military equipment including armored vests, armored rigs, and ballistic helmets. Weapons can be built by the player by customizing all its constituent parts, such as selecting the dust cover, grip, stock and scope, a degree of complexity uncommonly seen in the first-person shooter genre. CombatĮscape from Tarkov 's gameplay has been compared to military simulation games such as the ARMA series. These bonuses include reducing the cooldown timer to play as a Scav, increasing experience gained, and the ability to craft items. Players have an upgradeable "Hideout" living area, which is an underground bomb shelter that – once upgraded with scavenged or purchased materials – gives the players in-game bonuses. These traders also task the player with completing quests which increase their trader loyalty, enabling access to more items and quests. ![]() While not in a raid, players can sell unwanted loot to traders or other players via the flea market and purchase new equipment. Each raid lasts between 15 and 45 minutes depending on the map, and may contain up to 14 players. After finishing a scavenger raid, there is a cooldown timer until the mode becomes available again for the player. In scavenger raids (known as scav runs) players are given a random set of equipment, instead of items from their personal stash, and enter a raid that is already in progress at a random location. Players can insure weapons and equipment they brought in which enables that gear to be returned to them if not taken by other players. When players die in a raid, they lose everything, including loot and the equipment they brought into the raid. The game has a minimal HUD, with little on-screen information presented to the player. In addition to combat, players can also find loot in these maps such as firearms, equipment, and armor, and, once extracted, can store their loot in a stash to use in future raids or can be sold to other players in a virtual flea market if having a "found in raid" status. In addition to these standard extractions, players are also given the opportunity to use "optional" extraction points near the middle of the map, but must meet various requirements per extract in order to do so, such as paying roubles (the primary in-game currency), not having a backpack, or having certain items equipped on their character. Once in-game, the players are given an extraction point on the other side of the map, and must fight against other players and non-player characters to reach that point in order to escape. In these raids, players can choose to play solo or in groups and spawn on one side of a variety of maps to choose from in the game. In its current state, Escape from Tarkov incorporates three different modes for the players to play: online PMC raids, Scav (short for "scavenger") raids, and a temporary offline mode. The developers of Escape from Tarkov refer to the game as a realistic and hardcore first-person shooter, survival video game that borrows elements from massively multiplayer online games. Players join matches called "raids" in which they fight other players and bots for loot and aim to survive and escape. The game is set in the fictional Norvinsk region, where a war is taking place between two private military companies (United Security "USEC" and the Battle Encounter Assault Regiment "BEAR"). ![]() Escape from Tarkov is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter video game in development by Battlestate Games for Windows. ![]()
